About Me

I’m Justin. I work at the largest United Methodist church in the country, which means I have an abundance of opportunities to make mistakes. Pastoring complex people as we make sense of the messiness of our stories is my passion.

I’m an ordained Deacon serving with discipleship ministries. I have a couple of degrees in Bible and theology from Trevecca Nazarene University and the Candler School of Theology at Emory University. Most surprising to my journey has been the prevalence of mentors gifted in the field of mental health. I even married an addiction therapist!

I grew up in West Virginia and inherited the values of persistence and community from my home state. Sports, coffee, and music are my side hustles.

I’ve gotten to work on some amazing projects as part of my job at Church of the Resurrection. In 2021 I started a young adult ministry that grew into a community of 100 or so. In 2022 I helped design and implement a new small group program that has now welcomed thousands of people into Christian community. The books I wrote for that program can be found below. Now, as the discipleship director at Resurrection Leawood, I’m focusing on adult education. Teaching is a passion and a gift. On any given week you can find me teaching, often on the themes of faith and mental health, whether it’s in a small Sunday School classroom or a topical series given to large crowds.
